Kodak EasyShare C913 9.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Silver) Review

Kodak EasyShare C913 9.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom

This camera arrived just a few days before a trip to Taiwan / Macau and I took the instruction book to read on the plane.I'd damaged my previous camera (also a Kodak EasyShare) and although it had resumed working, I took this one as a backup. It was great! It held up through all sorts of weather and packing, took short videos when wanted, even had a "museum" feature that allowed me to take great photos in the Maritime Museum in Macau. It runs on AA batteries and lasts plenty long--all in all, I was very happy with it and with the quality of photos it produced.Remember to use the ISO feature in the evening, get up close whenever possible for the sharpest photos, and unless you are shooting for a magazine, you'll probably be happy with it.I am still using both cameras, have tons of good photos and video--

GE A950-BK 9MP Digital Camera with 5X Optical Zoom and 2.5 Inch LCD with Auto Brightness - Black Review

GE A950-BK 9MP Digital Camera with 5X Optical Zoom and 2.5 Inch LCD with Auto Brightness - Black

Pros:Inexpensive, decent pictures, good zoom, does with good quality audio, small size, good battery life, feature-rich for the $$$, accepts SD cards for low cost-high volume pictures or video capturing.

Cons:Controls are not intuitive, ANNOYING bright red light that precludes flash, rather cumbersome menu, 9.1 megapixel claim questionable.

This is a good, decent, low-buck camera that's full of features. At $[...] (the amount I paid) it does just about everything I need it to.I added a 4 GB SD card for ten bucks and I can take up to 995 pictures (or about 35 minutes of video - or a reduced combination of still pics and video). The 2 (AA) batteries last a good long time. The LCD viewer is very clear.

One of the biggest issues I had when first using this camera was simply taking a picture. You have to FULLY depress the flash button to get a snapshot.I took about 30 "focus" shots before I got a picture. If you gently press the Flash button the picture simply locks into focus.I had to read the manual to find out how to get a picture.Just a little more muscle into the Flash finger, and 'Voila!' - photo produced!

One thing I question is the 9.1 megapixel claim GE makes, as my 3 year old 3.1 Megapixel FujiFilm S2000 takes pictures that have *slightly* lower resolution - I say this puts together probably 5.5-6 megapixel at best.Still for the $$$ I paid this is a great deal.

So overall this is good for what it is - an inexpensive camera that lets you capture great moments without breaking the bank : and that's a VERY important thing in this economic environment.Obviously it won't even come close in picture quality to the Canon, Nikon, Sony or other high end cameras. If you're in the market for top quality pictures and extended lens capability - forget it.This camera is not for you.But for good, cheap, decent pictures - consider it a "best buy".I recommend it.

Sony DSCP31 Cyber-shot 2MP Digital Still Camera Review

Sony DSCP31 Cyber-shot 2MP Digital Still Camera
Average Reviews:

For the money, this is the best camera for a person who wants to get their feet wet in the world of Digital Photos. It is ready to shoot out of the box with no settings to mess with, but also has many adjustible settings to help make great pictures. It comes with all the accesories you need, but you should plan on getting at least a 32mb Memory Stick. Also, right now Sony is giving a $[money] instant credit for an accessory from their webiste when you register the camera. I used this to buy the Quick charger kit. This comes with an extra pair of NiMH batteries, Quick Charger, and custom camera case. with the discount, it is about [money]. The quick charger will charge 2 batteries in about an hour and a half, or 4 batteries in about 4 hours. The charger included with the camera takes 13 hours to charge 2 batteries, so this is a good investment. The camera is small and easy to hold in your hand. The LCD screen is not big but good enough to size up your photos. The movie mode is OK, no sound but cool for taking little clips. The Twlight modes are great, I have got some great dusk and night pictures using the twlight modes. Overall, After buying a Memory Stick and the Charger kit, I feel I got a great camera for under [money] total.

Product Description:
Sony's DSC-P31 combines compact dimensions with an affordable 2-megapixel sensor and AA battery power. If you're looking for a take-anywhere camera that's easy to use and produces sharp images, the P31 is worth a closer look.
Optics and Resolution
The DSC-P31's 2-megapixel sensor captures enough detail for sharp prints at sizes up to 8 by 10 inches. For the typical family photographer, 2 megapixels is a great balance between price and performance. If you want a camera with even more resolution, you'll need to step up to a 3- or 4-megapixel model like the DSC-P71 or DSC-P9.
The autofocus lens does not have a true optical zoom, but a 2x digital zoom (6x total) works in much the same way. Remember, however, that digital zoom tends to reduce the sharpness and detail of your image, so it's not as useful as a true zoom lens. In low-light situations (a particular weakness for many digital cameras), a focus-assist lamp sends out a small patterned beam to help the camera accurately determine distance, and special circuitry automatically reduces the "static" that typically plagues nighttime digital shots.
To compose your images, either use the traditional camera viewfinder or the 1.6-inch LCD display (which is also used to review the shots you've taken). Having both types of viewfinders offers the best of both worlds: if you're used to using a film camera or want to conserve battery life, use the viewfinder. If you want to see exactly the picture you'll capture, use the LCD display.
More Features
Though the P31 is designed for point-and-shoot simplicity, there are several options for more adventurous photographers, including manual focus with macro, adjustable ISO and white balance settings, exposure compensation, and the ability to shoot black-and-white, sepia, solarized, and negative images.
Power
The P31 uses two AA batteries--a pair of high-capacity nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) rechargeables and charger are included. The benefit to using standard AA batteries instead of a custom proprietary battery is that AA batteries are widely available, so missing a once-in-a-lifetime shot due to dead batteries won't be an issue. The downside is that a digital camera will kill a set of alkaline batteries extremely quickly, especially if you're using the camera's LCD display. To ensure you'll always be ready for action, we recommend getting a second pair of batteries so you can always have one set in the camera and the other set in the charger.
Movie Mode
In movie mode, the camera captures silent video clips. Most digital cameras' movie modes are limited to 15- or 30-second clips, but in EX mode, the P31 can keep shooting until you've filled the memory card. The limited resolution of your movies guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it's perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative.
Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on Memory Sticks, Sony's proprietary memory-card format. The included 8 MB stick holds approximately 12 images at the camera's default settings. Memory Sticks are reusable, but if you tend to take more than 12 images per outing you'll want a bigger card. A 128 MB stick is a great size for this camera, storing around 200 images. To transfer images to your computer, simply attach the included USB cable between your PC and your camera. Your computer should automatically recognize your camera and let you move the pictures to your hard drive. If you own a Sony desktop or laptop, your computer may already have a built-in Memory Stick reader.

Size
At 4.2 by 2.3 by 1.6 inches and 8.5 ounces fully loaded, the P31 is an extremely compact and portable digital camera.
Contents and Recommended Accessories
The package includes the DSC-P31 camera, two rechargeable NH-AA-D1 rechargeable batteries, BC-CS1 charger, video and USB cables, wrist strap, 8 MB Memory Stick, and software on CD.
Everything you need to get started is included in the box, but we recommend these accessories to make the most of your camera: a carrying case, a spare set of NiMH rechargeable size AA batteries, and a higher-capacity memory stick. Compatible accessories for this camera are listed near the top of this page. --Shane Burnett
Pros:

2-megapixel resolution is perfect for most users
Compact dimensions make it easy to bring this camera along on outings
Point-and-shoot operation makes it easy for even beginners to get great results

Cons:

    No optical zoom lens
    Movie mode lacks sound
Proprietary Memory Stick memory card format less common andmore expensive than other formats

I have two other Sony Cyber-shot cameras that I am very happy with so when I needed an extra pocket-sized camera, it was a simple decision.I really like the larger screen on this camera and the simplicity of the settings means less fussing and more point & shoot. In fact, I found myself grabbing this camera more than my old Cyber-shot which has more features.

I only had one issue in three weeks of frequent use. There was a more noticeable delay sometimes when taking pictures and some pictures came out blurry. This mostly occurred when I was taking photographs of stationary aircraft outside in full sunlight so I am not sure why it had difficulty finding the focal point.I would retake the picture seconds later and it would focus just fine. Our conclusion was that it might have been a low battery issue since we had to replace the batteries the next day. However, the low battery indicator did not come on during these issues.

This camera is a really good camera.Granted it isn't one of the higher quality ones you can get out there, but for the price and the features you cant beat it.The picture quality is very good in my opinion.I have used it both indoor and outdoor, day and night and was pleased with the outcome. The movie mode does have sound as long as you do the playback on a computer. The movie quality isn't too bad....once again for the price. The camera is very simple to use and also has a simple mode. This also triples as a pc cam, so all in all you are getting 3 cams in one. With that said if you are looking to take good pics, decent movie clips, and have a pc cam then this is the way to go whether you are on a budget or not.

I bought this camera about a momth ago on newegg for under $80, and for the price it's not bad. It's small, stylish, has a large lcd and in general takes good photos. It uses AA batteries which in general I dislike because they tend to have a worse lifespan compared to proprietary camera batteries but I was impressed with the lifespan of two cheap NIMH rechargeables.I could easily take 150 photos with flash before thinking about recharging. The biggest problem I had with the camera was picture quality.Outdoors in sunlight it takes ok photos but in low lights pictures can turn out blurry even with the flash turned on.In addition there really isn't a macro mode.I tried to use it to take photos of food dishes during a recent trip to a restaurant but the photos didn't turn out well.I think that if you're not willing to spring the extra $20-$40 for a Canon (which I've had excellent success with) then this is a decent alternative.

Nikon Coolpix 3200 3.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom Review

Nikon Coolpix 3200 3.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had my coolpix 3200 for about a week, and am really surprised at how good the pictures are, how easy it is to get the pictures into my PC, and how long the batteries last. I bought Duracell rechargeables with the camera, told my camera that these were the batteries I was using through its menu system, and have been taking pictures for a week on the same batteries. That's more than 80 pictures -- perhaps more -- all on the same 2 batteries, most of them using a flash. My battery charge meter has not even shown up yet.
When I first read the manual, I didn't understand the value of all the frame, portrait, and scene assist modes. As I've used the camera, though, I've come to see that they are very important. The frame and portrait assistants actually change the location of the auto-focus. When I am in sports mode, the camera's auto-focus is constantly changing so that the picture will shoot quickly when the shutter release is pressed. Shutter speed and aperature are adjusted depending on which scene I've selected. In other words, using the modes makes for much better pictures. They are more than just marketing pitches.
The software that came with the camera is okay, though it is nothing earth shaking. Better tools came with my scanner/copier/printer combo, but if you don't have those tools, what comes with the camera is much better than nothing and will get the job done.
I'm very satisfied. The camera is so small that I wear it in a tiny case on my belt all the time.
BTW, I was going to buy the 2200 instead, but am glad that I didn't. Once I had the manual (which is the same for both cameras), I saw that there are a number of small features that the 3200 has that are not available to the 2200. For example, the 3200 has sound for movies, the 2200 does not. You can record voice memos and set sounds for camera functions with the 3200. The 3200 can take more continuous pictures at a time (due to the higher resolution and space required). There are more differences, and most of them are small, but by the time you add them all up, it's worth the additional $100, in my oppinion.
I was an avid amateur photographer back "in the day", but grew tired of the hassles of large cameras and film developing. Thanks to this tiny, filmless camera, I'm a photographer again.

I don't know much about the camera but I like the default quality settings of the picture. I have used Kodak, Cannon, etc but I had to adjust Brightness, etc. to before I take the picture. Otherwise, picture came out very bright and red. But with this Samsung camera, I don't have to adjust anything and still gets the best picture color. Only bad thing about this camera is the response time. After I take 1 picture, I have to wait for a few second to take another.

Sony DSC-P50 Cyber-shot 2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Silver) Review

Sony DSC-P50 Cyber-shot 2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The P-50 and Canon A20 were my final two choices.I decided to go with the P-50 because it used only 2AA batteries and had the MPEG and Clip Movie recording features which is very neat.
I'm glad I went with the P-50.Here is my pro and con list for the P-50:
Pros:
* 3 optical zoom (it zooms fast)
* Uses 2 AA batteries.Don't get the battery pack.Just get 6 NiMh batteries with a rating of at least 1600mha, which are inexpensive.I got 4 Energizer 1600 mha NiMh batteries and a recharger at Target for only $...NiMH batteries last twice as long as alkalines and I haven't had to worry about my batteries dying.
* MPEG and Clip (GIF) movie modes are real fun.No sound on the MPEG, but spending an extra $... for a camera with sound wasn't worth it to me.For you who design web pages, you'll love the Clip (GIF) movie mode.
* Memory Stick, although expensive, is much more compact and stores more memory. However, the 4MB stick that comes with the camera is lame unless you plan to take only lower quality resolutions.I got a 64MB stick and at FINE quality (if using STANDARD quality, double all the numbers below) can hold the following: 67 1600x1200, 174 1024 x768, 400 640x480.As you can see that's alot of pictures.
* ISO flexibility and twilight mode. This helps when shooting in low light. The AF illuminator really helps the camera to focus in low light.
* Can crop pictures and cut MPEGs.
* If you change the Power Save mode to "off", then the camera lag time (a common complaint in these reviews) after you take a picture is very minimal. It's actually fast compared to other digital cameras I've used.
* Very fast transfer rate using the USB driver. The camera becomes another drive in Windows Explorer that you just drag to your hard drive.Very fast.I have Windows ME which allows Windows Explorer to view in thumbnail mode, so I can even preview all the pictures before moving them to the hard drive.
* The video out mode is cool.Just plug in the supplied jack cord to your P-50 and to your TV or VCR and see a slide show of your pictures you just took.
* If you auto-focus by pressing the shutter button half way, then the camera takes the picture very fast with almost no lag time, unlike other digital cameras in this price range,
* 37mm threads and the fact the optical zoom stays within the camera allows you to use an UV filter for better picture quality and as a lens protector.
* You can view your pictures taken also in thumbnail mode. Also, the camera tells you your settings (i.e shutter speed, iso, EV, etc.) of the picture.
* The camera allows the option to imprint the date onto your digital photos. This is a must for me as I never remember the date of the picture without this feature.
* The lens cap comes with a lens strap so you won't lose your cap.
Cons:
* 41mm lens.If you know photography, you will realize that most SLRs and point and shoots have 35mm lens. The lower the number, the better the wide angle, which allows you to take more area from the same distance making your objects also larger. However, the above pros by far outweigh this.If you're not a camera junkie like I am, you probably won't even notice this.
* The viewfinder only shows approx 70% of the actual picture taken and is slighty "skewed" to the left.If you think you got your object centered using the viewfinder, you'll will find out that the subject will be slightly left in the actual picture. The way around this is to use the LCD, which shows 100% of the actual picture and is not skewed.
All in all, in the 2.1 megapixel range and under $... as of 9/8/01, I feel this camera is the best one.

Product Description:
Designed to be an affordable take-anywhere replacement for your film point-and-shoot, Sony's DSC-P50 combines compact dimensions with a high-performance 2-megapixel sensor and flexible power options.
Optics and Resolution
The DSC-P50's 2-megapixel CCD image sensor captures enough detail for sharp prints at sizes up to 8 by 10 inches. For the typical family photographer, 2 megapixels is a great balance between price and performance. If you're looking for a model with more resolution (so you can make even larger prints or crop your images and still have plenty of detail left for prints), Sony's DSC-P5 and DSC-P71 are similar models with 3-megapixel sensors.
A 3x optical zoom lens (41-123mm equivalent) helps you to capture exactly the picture you want, and an additional 2x digital zoom (6x total) further magnifies your image. Remember, however, that digital zoom tends to reduce the sharpness and detail of your image, so it's best used sparingly. In low-light situations (a particular weakness for many digital cameras), a focus-assist lamp sends out a small patterned beam to help the camera accurately determine distance.
To compose your images, either use the traditional camera viewfinder or the 1.5-inch LCD display (which is also used to review the shots you've taken). Having both types of viewfinders offers the best of both worlds: if you're used to using a film camera or want to conserve battery life, use the viewfinder. If you want to see exactly the picture you'll be capturing, use the LCD display.
More Features

The P50 is designed to be a point-and-shoot model, but more adventurous photographers will appreciate adjustable ISO and white-balance settings, exposure compensation, normal and spot metering, and the ability to shoot black-and-white, sepia, solarized, and negative images.
Power
When it comes to power, some photographers like cameras that use readily available AA batteries, while others prefer the superior capacity of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries specifically designed for a digital camera. The P50 provides both options, using either two AA batteries (included) or an optional NP-FS11 InfoLithium battery. The choice is yours--for occasional users, a set of disposable lithium AA batteries is the most affordable choice, offering a long shelf life and high capacity. For more frequent users, either the InfoLithium setup or a set of rechargeable high-capacity NiMH batteries is recommended. The InfoLithium setup offers the added advantage of estimating remaining battery life in minutes and displaying this on-screen. No matter which setup you choose, the wide availability of AA batteries ensures that missing a once-in-a-lifetime shot due to dead batteries won't be an issue.
Movie Mode
In movie mode, the camera captures silent video clips. Most digital cameras' movie modes are limited to 15- or 30-second clips, but the P50 can keep shooting until you've filled the memory card.

The included 4 MB stick holds approximately seven images at the camera's default settings. Memory Sticks are reusable, but if you tend to take more than seven images per outing, then you'll want a bigger card. A 64 MB stick is a great size for this camera, storing around 100 images. To transfer images to your computer, simply attach the included USB cable between your PC and your camera. Your computer should automatically recognize your camera and let you move the pictures to your hard drive. If you own a Sony desktop or laptop, your computer may already have a built-in Memory Stick reader.

Size
At 5 by 2.4 by 2.1 inches and 9 ounces, the P50 is not Sony's smallest digital camera, but it's still quite compact and portable.
Contents and Recommended Accessories
The package includes the DSC-P50 camera, two AA batteries, video and USB cables, wrist strap, 4 MB Memory Stick, and software on CD.
Everything you need to get started is included in the box, but we recommend these accessories to make the most of your camera: a carrying case, a higher-capacity memory stick, and an InfoLithium battery setup or set of rechargeable size AA batteries. Compatible accessories for this camera are listed near the top of this page. --Shane Burnett
Pros:

Unlimited movie mode lets you make video clips of any length
Flexible power options let you choose the best battery solution for your needs
Point-and-shoot operation makes it easy for even beginners to get great results

Cons:

    Movie mode lacks sound

(...)P>Well, for starters I'm not an expert on digital cameras (I've owned them for awhile, but I'm a casual pic taker); however, I did a great deal of online reasearch before purchasing this one.I felt this model gave me what I needed in the price range I could afford.I was a little nervous though - as I couldn't find user reviews anywhere (just the pro reviews - which were very helpful).
First off - Bad News.... there is virtually no paper user's manual. The GOOD NEWS though is they include a digital users manual on CD ROM with the camera (it's very in depth). The REALLY GOOD NEWS is you can download the user's manual before you even buy the camera from www.casio.com!! (I did this, and by the time my camera arrived - I felt like a pro using it).
The camera is not "chinzy" feeling (like some others - Fuji for example) - it's solid built and just feels like quality. It's small, but not to tiny that it's difficult to use.The LCD screen is a good size (and you can zoom to view pics magnified from the LCD.
The camera does everything it promises.I adore it.
The bells and whistles are fun (though many of them not necessary for someone like me).I love the 10 second delay shot. This way I can get in the pic myself.
Regarding battery life:Keep in mind - I always use the LCD screen and flash (so my batteries wear down faster than other people's might).I'm getting about 50 or so pics per charge from the Sanyo Batteries that come with the camera.I'm getting about 24 pics per charge from the Kodak 1700 batteries I purchased.I'm happy with this. The batteries charge rather quickly - and with 3 sets - I'm never stuck. These NimH AA's are pretty inexpensive - so it's really no big deal. I do wonder if my lack of pictures per charge wouldn't be improved with a "better" charger (the one that came with the camera is fine....but I bet it isn't top of the line).
Here is something someone might want to know (particularly someone unfamiliar with digital cameras). They say you MUST (MUST MUST) use an AC adapter power whenever connecting the camera to the computer to transfer pics etc. This is NOT included with the camera. So - add about $30 to the price of this camera pretty much since you must buy this "accessory" :) (The camera is STILL WORTH IT).
I used my camera to take a full week of pictures in an extremely dim lit setting (halloween theme week).(...))
Yes - another tip:In really really dim lit settings (almost dark) your camera might give the "red" sign (meaning it's not focused) - take the pic anyway (all mine came out in focus when this happened to me)
The camera is great - I'm very glad I purchased it!!

*** UPDATE March 15, 2010

Yes, that's 2010!Here it is, going on TWO YEARS.That has got to be a record.I still love this camera, so if you're looking at a cheap one second-hand, or a new one on deep discount, it's probably a good bet.I liked it so much I bought my daughter one last year (early 2009) for her birthday. She's very rough on cameras, and hers has a few problems now, but still takes good pictures. It is definitely NOT the best camera, but an excellent bet for an all-around family workhorse photo machine.

*****

This is our latest in a loong series of digital cameras. The last two have been Nikons that I thought were pretty decent, but it turns out I've been missing a LOT.This Sony is a good size (I have small hands, though), with a bit of weight to it that convinces me it's more solidly made than some others out there. Our Nikons died because the LCD screens cracked under very little pressure - this one feels a bit more substantial, though I still won't be tossing it around.

But the best part about this camera is that it takes great pictures, right out of the box.The included AA batteries don't last long, but once we switched to rechargeables, there has been no issue. And choosing a camera that uses standard size-and-shape batteries was VERY important, since we do sometimes need to buy & use AA's when we're on the go.

It only includes 22mb of memory, which will only hold 8-10 pictures on the medium-quality mode, but I found a 4Gb card for not too much money that will hold over 1000 more.Just plan on adding the cost of memory to the camera purchase, because the built-in memory simply is not enough.

In general, I'm thrilled. With significantly less shutter delay, I can finally take the pictures I've been WANTING to take all along - spontaneous, cute, funny pictures of my kids in less-than-ideal conditions:low lighting, moving targets, etc (when are ANY kids ever in an ideal pose for more than a millisecond???).

*** UPDATE November 19, 2008

Wanted to update this in response to a question. It has been a bit of a peeve over the last few months that the DSC730 doesn't seem to be able to zoom when you're shooting a video. You can zoom before, but once you click the shutter button to start shooting, you're stuck with the level of zoom you established beforehand.Mighty annoying. My husband's slightly higher-end Sony has this feature, as did my daughter's much cheaper camera... so I have no clue why they'd leave it out of this one.Drat.Just a little fly in the otherwise great ointment.:-)
NOTE:this camera has taken several lickings and still ticking... so I guess my bad "luck" was only with Nikons.

Fujifilm Finepix A170 10.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD Review

Fujifilm Finepix A170 10.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros: good build quality, decent lens, quiet zoom motor, uses NiMH AA, small size for AA battery cameras, large screen with decent resolution, fast lens at f2.9, slightly wider than average 32mm lens, many fool-proof features, auto scene selection (very nice for "dummies"), panoramic mode that works well, simple to use, very portable, long battery life.

Cons: battery meter fluctuates in accurate response to the NiMH voltage, and has the unintended effect of making the "dummy" user nervous. Image is highly compressed and shows in smeared up details. ISO higher than 400 are very noisy with flattened colors and details, though higher iso are often selected automatically to prevent blur (which is understandable from an average consumer point of view). Video files are too big for the resolution relative to even the average, can use better compression methods. No orientation sensor. Without face detection only center point AF is available.

Notes: Got this camera for my dad, who can't ever figure out how to operate anything other than the shutter button. The automatic scene selection was the reason why I got this, along with the ability to use rechargeable AA and its small size (smallest among the AA cameras?).

The automatic scene selection works very well. It actively detects lighting, faces, and subject distance (thus uses more battery power as it continuously focuses and meters the scene); it then uses the combination of these information to determine if it's portrait, backlight, macro, landscape, night modes, etc. Scenes are manually selectable too, especially ones that are not auto-detectable (e.g. long shutter requires tripod, and wouldn't be selected automatically since it'll not be fool-proof. ;)). There's a "manual" which lets you configure all the features other than shutter speed and aperture, as well as a regular "auto" mode.

Build quality on the two cameras we got were excellent. It's a budget camera so it was made of a piano-like finish silver plastic with chrome trims. It felt solid in the hand with no squeaks and loose bits, and all buttons were tight and responsive, especially the shutter button. The zoom motor was very smooth and quiet (can't say that about many of the canons), and the LCD screen was big enough and had sufficient resolution and brightness to look satisfactory.

Images, even at the highest resolution and best quality show significant compression artifacts (smeared details and loss of color depth). Higher ISO than 400 shows significant noise. Lens is probably on the soft side though I haven't really done serious comparisons, but nothing extraordinary for this price level. The field resolution is fairly even though, and corner blurriness didn't bleed too much into the image, which is good. Lens is fairly quick at f2.9, impressive for this size camera, and also slightly wide at 32mm equivalent. Video files seems bigger than average: a 640x480 movie can only record for about 30 minutes on a 8gb card; the quality of the videos didn't seem to justify the very large size. Images at lower ISO have decent color reproduction, even at long shutter speeds (tripod night scene mode). The longest shutter time I was able to get out of this thing is 4", but am not sure if it can go longer.

Battery life is excellent: we used it heavily (flash photos, active scene selection, lots of video tests) for quite a bit more than 2 hours (i don't want to say 3 hours but it's close if not more) before the two Eneloops (around 2000mA each) ran out completely. DO get rechargeable low discharge NiMH batteries, as alkalines are not meant for high current draw of digital cameras and will be wasted in a short order. The battery meter fluctuates quite a bit though, as it seems to depend directly on the instant voltage of the battery; e.g. it will dip slightly after a flash photo, but recover over time as the battery chemistry catches up and shows full again in seconds/minutes. It did get my dad a little nervous though; but to me it is better than some other brands who don't even show the battery meter at all until nearly depleted (e.g. canon A series), probably due to the difficulty in tracking the NiMH voltage?

Fuji made a point of making this camera easy to use and fool-proof. The auto scene selection is a testament of that, and I appreciate this feature very much, particularly for elderly or people who aren't tech savvy and don't know when to use fill flash/slow shutter/slow sync, etc. Fuji seems to automatically manage most situations pretty well. While the auto scene mode's hiking up ISOs in low light situations isn't my cup of tea (done at the sacrifice of image quality) it does make sense in that it will at least GET the image (and not some blur). It's thoughtful in trying to satisfy the less knowledgeable users, even at slight sacrifice in absolute quality.

It's a good camera for "dummies"--with its innovative auto scene selection feature, compact size, universally available and long lasting batteries-- if you can tolerate the apparently mediocre image quality. At this price range you probably shouldn't expect much better. Portability, build quality, ease of use, and affordability are all covered very well by this little package. I think it's worth a look if you are in for an economical pocket camera with decent performance and true point-and-shoot ease.

Kodak Easyshare CX7430 4MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom Review

Kodak Easyshare CX7430 4MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Kodak CX7430 Purchased: June 2004, used frequently

MOST NOTABLE FEATURE: 640x480 VIDEO+AUDIO CAPABILITY (NO TIME LIMIT)
1) Using ordinary 1800mah NiMH rechargeable AA batteries, I have been able to take videowith audio at the highest quality setting for over 55 minutes (until my memory card ranout) with the LCD screen TURNED ON the entire time, and the low battery indicator didn't even appear!
2) 1GB SD cards have fallen swiftly in price and are a great addition to this camera.My1GB Lexar SD card can record over 55 minutes of video with audio at high quality (640 by480 pixels, 13 frames per second), and 80 minutes at medium quality (320 by 240 pixels,20 frames per second; max time limit is 80 minutes for this setting).A 512MB SD cardcan record for just over 28 minutes straight (highest setting), and a 256MB SD card for slightly over 13minutes.
3) Most digital cameras offer video capability, but limit your filming time to 30 secondsor 3 minutes per video in most cases. Those that don't limit filming time usuallyprovide resolution nowhere as good as the CX7430's high-quality video. (Update: Canon's SD-series cameras are a major exception. Note that you will pay much more [except for the SD110] and that you will only get about 15-25 minutes of 640x480 15fps video/audio out of a 1GB SD card. The SD300's [4MP] picture quality is about the same as the Kodak CX7430's.)
4) The camera is highly competitively priced even when compared to dedicated digitalvideo camcorders that use memory cards rather than tapes or DVDs.Both resolution andframe rate are comparable to or even better than the "digital tapeless" camcorders I havelooked at on amazon (as of October 2004), and given its still photo capability the CX7430 is bargain-priced. Anyone considering buying a digital tapeless camcorder should definitely consider thiscamera when deciding on their purchase.
- NOTE: Videos are recorded in QUICKTIME format.PRO's:
1) Great video capability as described above. The camera's microphone is excellent--I'verecorded videos in both quiet environments and an extremely loud dance club and thecamera adapted perfectly to both situations--no static or undesirable anomalies (thoughit did not pick up much of the bass in the club, if that matters).I've even used thecamera several times to record audio from my grad classes (camera simply pointed at theceiling, medium quality video setting; I extract the audio from the file for listening).
2) Takes excellent close-up photos.
3) Photos overall are very satisfactory.
4) Compact enough to fit in an ordinary front pocket.Pretty typical size and weight forits class.
5) The LCD screen is very bright and fine for use in all but very strong direct sunlight, where the LCD image gets slightly harder to see.
6) Interface is excellent.Buttons are responsive and the mode dial is very veryconvenient.
7) Good start-up time, about 3 seconds and you are ready to shoot.
8) 3X zoom.Perfectly satisfactory; once you start going over 4X zoom you need a tripodto take decent photos.
9) Small speaker to hear the audio when you play back your videos.
10) Extraordinary BatteryLife (see above).
11) Sturdy design.Another reviewer complained about the casing being easily scratched;I have used my camera for about 7 months now and it doesn't look a whole lot differentfrom when I bought it.The casing/finish seems pretty normal for this type of camera.
12) Decent variety of manual options, but not enough for amatuer photography (there is no true "manual" setting).
13) Good file compression!I have seen cameras produce pictures of about the samequality (or even worse) as the CX7430 and wind up with file sizes of 1MB or more perphoto.Average file size for the CX7430 ranges from 300KB to 750KB depending on thequality setting and content.
14) Fairly quick autofocus--just under one second from the time you press the picture button while the camera is pointed at an unfocused subject until the shutter closes and the picture is taken. If the subject is already in focus the picture is taken almost instantaneously.

CON's:
1) Pictures are easily blurred in some environments.See Taking Photos section below.
2) Several of the provided 7 photo settings on the dial are not worth using.
3) No case provided.
4) Videos taken in the camera's high-quality setting suffer from a very low frame rate(13fps), and the image blurs badly when you move the camera around quickly in softly-lit indoor environments. That said, the video capability is still remarkable fora camera of this type (and at this price).
5) The door covering the SD card slot and the data port is sturdy but doesn't latch verystrongly.
6) Zoom cannot be adjusted while taking video. You need to adjust zoom first, then startfilming.Focus also does not adjust during filming, but it's not a factor unless youbegin filming a landscape and then try to take close-up video without starting a newvideo file.Taking Photos:
Overall, I think the CX7430 takes pictures pretty typical of a 4MP camera (they lookabout the same as pictures taken by a friend's Casio Elixim(?) 4MP camera), in terms of both its ability to focus properly and the quality of the photos produced.
- Close up photos are a strong point of this camera.I use it to make photo "scans" ofimportant documents.
- Ignore the landscape, night (unless you have a tripod), and portrait settings.Ihaven't been to any sports events or anything similar so I haven't used the sportsetting.Given the slightly blurred pictures I've gotten at football games from cameras set on Auto, this setting might be useful.
- The best pictures this camera takes are: close-ups; outdoor, well-lit environments; andphotos (indoor or outdoor) where the flash has been used effectively, i.e., slightly dimenvironments with the subject no more than say 20 feet away depending on the lighting.
- I have not found any major problems with exposure or color-balance in the CX7430'spictures.If you want to take a picture of a sunset, however, focus the camera somewhereelse first, then take the picture, otherwise the camera automatically adjusts to dilute the color of the sky (i.e., deep orange-pink becomes very light pink).
- Pictures taken indoors in low to medium lighting *without flash* bear a strong chance of blurring unless taken by very very steady hands.Pictures taken indoors outside the range of the flash (say, distance of 25 feet or more) are pretty much guaranteed to be blurred to a significant degree unless the environment is extremely well lit.
- Picture quality decreases significantly in darker environments, but this is typical ofmost cameras.
- Two-star quality photos are fine for almost all situations.Photo dimensions increaseat the three-star setting but quality is not a whole lot better.

Other recommendations:
- Buy rechargeable batteries, they are a must for any digital camera.I suggest 1800mah(milli-amp hours) NiMH (Nickel-Metal-Hydride) rechargeables. The batteries will pay forthemselves very very quickly.
- Some reviewers have liked the software included with the camera, but I usually avoidproprietary software--my understanding is that Kodak software especially is loaded withspyware/adware--and I personally have never used the software that came with the CX7430. To transfer photos, the "Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard" included with Windows XPhas been more than adequate.(It should appear automatically when you connect the camerato your computer. If not, go to My Computer, look for the camera icon, and right clickon it, then choose "Get pictures."It can also be accessed if you are using a cardreader: go to My Computer, right click on the removeable drive, and choose "Autoplay,"then find the wizard in the list.)The wizard lets you pick a name for the folder itwill create for your photos under My Pictures, and names all of the photos and videosafter the folder.I am surprised by the number of my friends who still do not use thissimple, clean utility.Windows' Picture and Fax Viewer works fine for viewing photos. Editing, of course, is another matter.
- Buy a large memory card to take advantage of the camera's video features.I havegotten hours of priceless video of my friends and I studying in China. There aredefinitely times when still pictures just won't cut it, and even if you don't get a largememory card you will appreciate the ability to take a short clip every now and then. Memory prices have plummeted over the past year and a large card is definitely a worthyinvestment.

Bottom Line:
I highly recommend the Kodak CX7430.It's not a top-of-the-line model, but for thosewith modest photo and video needs, this is a superb value for the price.

I've owned two of these cameras in two years. They take great pictures. There is however, a Serious Problem with Dust getting inside the Camera. This dust causes severe spots on the Images. The Only Recourse is to send to Sony for cleaning which can can cost about $150 or more.I'm now in the market for yet another camera; the Spots are really getting bad now. Even though I love the pictures on my Cybershot, I will choose a different camera. I've been burned twice.

The camera is fantastic! and I'm happy with it. All the stuff are pretty good too, but just the Padded Carrying Case is too small to carrying the camera. It's okay for batteries, and the other stuff, but not for the camera. I had to buy another case that fits well.
