(More customer reviews)I've been using the Fuji Finepix 3800 for 10 days and I am extremely pleased with all aspects of this camera. Back in July, I had read an excellent magazine review of the Finepix 2800, and, after further research (including user reviews on Amazon.com), I had almost decided to purchase it. However, I was a little reluctant to buy a 2-megapixel camera, as consumer cameras were already getting to 4 megapixels. I decided to wait, hoping Fuji would update this model. A few days later they announced the 3800, and six weeks later I ordered mine....
In addition to increasing the resolution to 3 megapixels, Fuji has added several features that give you more picture-taking control, such as an aperture priority mode, sharpness adjustment, flash intensity, exposure adjustment, and several white balance options. Also new is the media card type. It's called xD Picture Card, and it's quite small, about the size of a postage stamp. The camera includes one 16 MB xD card, which holds about 26 pictures at the setting I use most (3 MP / normal). The other settings are 3 MP / fine (12 pictures), 2 MP (39), and 1 MP (49). You really need a larger capacity card if you're going to be away from your computer for any length of time, such as a vacation. (I plan to get a 128 MB xD card... as soon as they are available.)
The camera comes with a USB cable and various PC/Mac software applications for managing your photos. I haven't used their software; I have an iMac with iPhoto (free) for photo management (and a whole lot more) and PixelNhance (free) for photo editing. After taking a few pictures, I connected the cable to the camera and the iMac, and turned on the camera. iPhoto started up; I clicked one button and my pictures were downloaded. It was literally seconds from connecting cables to viewing my pictures. No configuration of software nor drivers nor anything else was required (thanks, Apple). The first thing I noticed was the picture quality. It is superb. The colors, the detail, everything, is quite amazing.
Taking pictures is easy, once you get used to the quirks of digital photography. Press the shutter release halfway and the camera focuses (after a brief image freeze). Keeping the button down, you can reframe the picture if necessary. Press down all the way to take the picture. There is a momentary delay while the picture is stored into memory, and then your picture is shown for about 2 seconds. This lets you know if you got the picture you wanted without having to change the camera mode to view your pictures. The 6x optical zoom (equivalent to a 200 mm lens on a 35 mm camera) was a big selling point for me. I like being able to quickly frame a picture, especially from a fair distance.
The electronic viewfinder (EVF) takes a little getting used to (compared to an SLR).I only use it when I have to, such as in bright sunlight. Otherwise I use the small LCD screen on the back of the camera. If you've read reviews of the 2800, you know that low light situations can be a problem for this camera. Not having used the 2800, I can't say whether Fuji has made improvements in this area for the 3800. However, it is still true that if there's not enough light, you won't see anything in the EVF or LCD. You can still take pictures in low light; you just have to set it for the widest angle, aim as best you can, and then check the result. If you missed the subject, re-aim and try again. You can always crop the picture when you get it on your computer. This camera, by the way, takes excellent pictures with the built-in flash, even when there's little or no other light.
The 3800 has a movie mode which allows you take a minute of 320x240 pixel video (or 3 minutes of 160x120) at 10 frames per second. This works great for those moments when you want a quick video but don't have the video camera. You can view the video on the camera, just like you view photos. And it's easy to download and view on your computer.
Photos stored on the camera can be easily viewed and deleted if you don't want them. (You can also mark photos as "protected" to prevent accidental deletion.) The buttons on the camera back are laid out well and easy to use. The menus for changing the camera settings and viewing/deleting photos are intuitive and easy to learn.
Like most digital cameras, this one goes through batteries very quickly. The four AA batteries included won't last very long. Better to invest in a good charger for AA NiMH batteries (the Mahi MH-C240F works great).
Also included is an adapter for optional zoom or wide angle lenses. The manual actually recommends leaving the adapter on the camera at all times (presumably to protect the telescoping lens housing) though you never see any photos of this camera with the adapter on it. I don't use the adapter because the lens cap doesn't fit on it very well (pops off too easily). The lens cap works fine on the camera without the adapter.
The bottom line: Fuji took an excellent, widely praised, highly regarded camera and made it better. I took a chance and bought this camera before all the reviews were in, just based on reviews of the 2800 and the additional features announced by Fuji. I have not been disappointed in the least.

(More customer reviews)I have been using the Fuji S5200 for several days now and think that it is a fantastic camera.I had been debating between this and several other superzooms.I chose the Fuji for its ISO capabilities and its real photo technology.

Pros:

-Great looks and build.You know this camera has quality written all over it from the moment you pick it up.
-Fast shot to shot times.
-Good auto focus capability, though not the best in its class.
-Good movie mode with 640 X 480 capability.
-Incredible High ISO capability!This is where the Fuji stands heads and above its competitors.You can actually use come pcitures at 1600 ISO with a little work.
-Excellent pictures in auto mode for a beginner.This is a great camera for someone wanting to learn how to use digital cameras.You can start off in auto mode and experiment with many manual settings.

Cons:

-Manual focusing is awkward to use.You have to hold on to 1 button and then move the zoom in or out to focus.
-The menus are a little more difficult to use than others I have tried, though you get used to it like anything else with practice.
-No optical stabilization.This is not really a con in my book due to its high ISO capabilities but some would argue the point.
-No hot shoe.

In the end, Fuji has taken and enhanced the S5100 in several ways to create a bargain of a camera the 399.00 price.Highly recommended!

(More customer reviews)I purchased this camera for outdoor use while kayaking. I have no intention of using it underwater, but having lost two cameras to water damage; I opted for something waterproof.

Pluses:1. The function buttons are tops - easy to find and press.
2. With tapered edges, the camera goes in my pocket easily.
3. Movie audio surprizingly good.
4. Multiple digital pixel settings - as low as 100 KB for
photos at the lowest setting - I e-mail my dad photos, he has
dial-up so short attachments are critical.
5. Photo quality color and resolution is good, including macro.
6. LCD display is good, even in strong sunlight
7. Menu choices are fairly intuitive.
8. Battery life seems good so far.
9. SD card - not that many waterproof cameras allow the use of
the common SD card.

Minuses1. Indoor shots are have noise.
2. No hardcopy, comprehensive manual, just an unbound, brief
multifolded paper.The comprehensive manual is on a CD.
Then again, if you are around water, FUJI may figure you
aren't going to take a paper manual with you.
3. Propriety USB cable for downloads - yet another cable to
keep seperate from a dozen other propriety cables me and my
family has.

Summary: The camera exceeds my expectation for outdoor use.Granted, the photos in lower light settings have some noise, but most of my photos are in bright daylight.If I am going to an indoor event with low light, I'll take my Canon that is not waterproof.

I wanted a camera that was light, could fit in my pocket, used the AA batteries or the NIMH AA batteries, and of course could take great pictures.The Canon A95 almost fits the bill, but it used 4 AA batteries while the Fuji and Sony use 2 AA batteries,and is a little too big and heavy.
Anyway, here are the Pros and Cons of each camera.

Fuji E550 Pros:
Great, very sharp pictures. (6 MP) I blew them up to 8 x 10 on my Epson Photo 700 printer and they were stunning! I have never seen such great output on my printer. The Sony DSC W1 is not even in the same league -- just look at the head shots on the Steves Digicam site and you will see how much sharper this camera is between the E550 and the DSC W1.As far as color, great color saturation It should be noted that all Fuji cameras tend to shift more toward blue, the Sony shifts more toward green (as do most digital cameras including Canon). Some say this makes grass not look green enough, but to my eye, the grass just looks like a darker green, it still looks green though on a brite sunny day. Skin tones look fine.I shot a pumpkin on the grass in bright daylight. The Sony shot had a yellow-orange pumpkin with light green grass, the Fuji shot had a very orange pumpkin with darker green grass. The Fuji shot was much sharper. I like the Fuji shot much better. Some say that the 6MP default is too compressed, I just don't see it.And the default compression allows for more pictures on the 512 XD card (over 300 I think).

2 A lens with great range - from 32 mm to 130 mm - goes wider and longer than most others. It is responsive and fast.The DSC-W1 is a 3 x zoom.

3. A comfortable grip and a large 2 inch screen

4. Lots of modes and options for the photographer to play with-
Program mode, shutter priority, aperture priority, sport mode
(the DSC-W1 doesnt have any of these) It should be noted that the sport mode is fair at best and does not compare to a real SLR such as the Digital Rebel), night, portrait mode, flash adjustment, white balance, program shift, continous autofocus, etc, etc..

Fuji E550 cons

The screen is practically unusable in brite sunlight.It washes out in the sun, images turn too bright and white and washout, you have to use the viewfinder to take your picture in many instances and then review it on the screen by switching to playback mode and cup your hand over the screen .The Sony screen works fine and you press button to instantly review your picture.

There is no autofocus lamp on the camera.Under low light the camera frequently cannot focus. In other words, you might have to turn on a light. However, indoor shots always come out better if you turn on more background lights.

The flash does not always work properly indoors - I am not sure why.The pictures sometimes have to be reshot because the flash did not fire. Sometimes I have to change my position for the flash to fire. However, when it does fire, the pictures look fine (and sharp)The Sony fires correctly all the time and has the autofocus lamp to autofocus fine. It also has the instant review button of the shot you took.. which is handy.
The Sony unfortunatly always chooses 1/50 of a second when you turn on your flash, the Fuji chooses 1/60 of a second.That may make it a litter harder to get a clear picture on the Sony.
The Fuji screen is also harder to use in lower light, but it is still more usable than in bright sunlight.

The Fuji has a pop-up flash, it tells you you need to pop up the flash, it does not do it automatically (a small annoyance).The Sony flash is built in.

The build quality of the Sony seems better- a more solid camera, well built.The Fuji seem flimsier, the pop-up flash may perhaps break one day.

And my wife will probable hate the Fuji because of the screen being pretty much unusable in bright sunlight and the darn camera flash and autofocus does not always work well indoors under low light.Of course she still likes our old Canon 2 MP S10 camera (which I was upgrading from).So.... how to resolve this...... Here is my conclusion:

I'm going to return the Sony.. I would have kept it it a heartbeat if it could take the incredible picture the Fuji can but unfortunately it just can't. And for me, it's about how much fun I can have with the camera and how tack sharp and colorful the pictures are that it produces.

I'll put up the the shortcomings of the Fuji E550 --- and Fuji, if you read this review...... fix those shortcomings and you won't be able to make enough cameras because these will fly off the shelf.

And my wife?I'll let her stick the the Canon S10.It's built well and will last for years to come.

Fujifilm SM05 Accessory Starter Kit Review

(More customer reviews)I really like the camera bag that came with this kit though I would prefer a little more room so I could store extra batteries, digital media cards, and the USB cord all in the pocket. The kit came with a charging base and a couple of rechargable batteries also. I would have prefered that it come with the power cord for the camera also, this would save more in the long run when it comes to battery time. You use more battery power when uploading pictures than any other time. All in all it was a great buy.

(More customer reviews)I bought this camera for my daughter. My husband was given one of these cameras as a gift 2 or 3 years ago. We already owned a Sony Cybershot (7.2 megapixels). The way the 2 cameras work and the features are almost identical but I always get much clearer, better pics with the Fuji. The ojects in the Fuji pics are always sharp and well-differentiated from the other objects in the picture. They have a more "3-D" as opposed to a "2-D" quality. The Fuji comes with 2 rechargeable AA batteries & a charger. It's really convenient to be able to just use disposable AA batteries if the rechargeable batteries run out of juice. (The Sony uses a specialty battery & I've been left without a camera to use when I've forgotten to recharge it.)

Synergy Digital-Quick Charger with Four Ultra High Power 2800 MaH AA Batteries

After placing the batteries into the charger and plugging it in, It became apparent that the word 'quick' in Quick Charger was figurative. The batteries that came with the charger took over 8 hours to charge...that led to the discovery of another feature flaw: the two color LED charge indicator. Other chargers have an indicator that changes abruptly: Red for charging, Green for charged. Some even blink the lights rapidly if the charger detects something wrong with a battery. Not so with this charger. On this charger, the LED changes GRADUALLY from red to green. And because the cheap LED has to light emitters in the same bulb, what color you can see depends on what angle you are viewing the charger from. So you have to wait until the entire LED is green to tell that the batteries are fully charged, and when I charged a second set of the same batteries (Brand, size and mAh rating were identical to the ones that came with the charger) it took nearly 12 hours.

All in all, the charger DOES work, The batteries DO last a LONG TIME (my Fuji Finepix S1500 takes four batteries, and I shot for 3 days on one set) But the charger is ANYTHING BUT quick. It should be labeled an overnight charger, because it certainly takes that long.

Buy if you want long lasting batteries, but don't expect to charge the batteries and then go on a photo shoot the same day. Charge the day before.
