After many years of fantastic pictures (as long as the subject was stationary!) my trusty Olympus D40-Zoom died - luckily at the end of a vacation. I spent about 30 hours researching a replacement that would satisfy my goals of (a) compact size, (b) standard AA batteries, (c) full manual controls, (d) outstanding image quality, (e) speed, (f) optical viewfinder.

In my opinion, the Canon A540 fits the bill almost perfectly. It's small enough to fit in a coat pocket or small belt case yet uses 2 AA batteries. Overall processing speed is blazingly fast unless you're taking flash pictures (and then you should expect about 4-5 seconds between flashes). Note that flash time is significantly better with rechargeable NiMh batteries than with standard AAs. And, unlike some other cameras I tried, the speed of the user interface (especially during playback) is very fast.

Picture quality in general is excellent, even in night situations. You have the option of ISO 80 - ISO 800 with the latter being noisy but usable. (Would you rather miss a shot completely or have a little noise? How about the ability to take a picture in low lighting without the flash?) And, you have full manual controls, in addition to the 21 predefined scene types. I'm not sold on the usefullness of the Color Swap and Color Accent modes, but the other modes are well thought out.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was the movie mode, which offers up to 30 fps VGA quality 640x480 continuous shooting up to 1GB per clip, to the maximum size of your SD card. This is still no substitute for a high-quality camcorder, but it's a nice option to have in those situations where you just have the camera. (And note that unlike this camera, most camcorders offer some form of image stabilization.) Note that the movie mode on the A540 is significantly more capable than the lower-megapixel twin A530 (which is limited to 2 minute clips at 15fps).

I was close to getting the Canon A700, which uses the same 6MP sensor and user interface but offers a 6x optical zoom instead of a 4x zoom. In the end, after trying both cameras in the store, I settled on the A540. Why? The A700 is ever-so-slightly larger (about 0.25 inches wider and slightly taller), and the more complicated lens takes longer to startup and to zoom. Maybe it was the lighting, but the noise quality on the A700 seemed higher than the A540, although they use the same sensor. Perhaps this has something to do with the different lenses? Finally, the A700 doesn't offer an underwater case which I'd like to have as an option some day.

In summary, Canon A540 Pros:
- very fast startup and shot-to-shot speed (flash not withstanding)
- excellent and speedy auto-focus even in low light (although the AF assist light can slow this down)
- extremely fast user interface and playback performance, even zooming in on photos
- outstanding photo quality, even in relatively low light (good color balance, noise levels at high ISO are acceptable, almost non-existent chromatic aberation)
- 6 megapixel sensor, 4x optical zoom
- ISO 80 to 800 (800 has noticeable noise but still usable)
- surprisingly usable movie mode (unlike the A530, can record up 30fps of continuous video at 1GB sections up to size of the SD card)
- outstanding user interface: options are well laid out and easy to locate, very well thought-out record and playback options
- full manual controls (shutter priority, appeture priority, full manual)
- custom white balance option in addition to presets
- flash adjusts angle based on wide-telephoto zoom
- well built case, very comfortable grip
- uses SD cards (and takes advantage of high-speed SD)
- uses 2 AA batteries
- unbelieveable battery life (approx 350 shots on 2 rechargeable NiMh AA, with the display on)
- supports optional conversion lenses and underwater case

Cons (to me, all very minor):
- screen while large isn't very high res (85k pixels)
- flash recharge time is acceptable but not great (4 - 5sec between pictures using NiMh batteries)
- preview display blanks while flash recharges
- it's possible to insert the SD card upside down and you don't realize until you try to close the cover (would be easy to break the cover if you force this)
- the markings for the battery orientation are difficult to read
- no RAW image support, but you can select from 3 different compression ratios for image quality
- dubious color accent and color swap modes

Canon Powershot A2000IS 10MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom Review

I have used at least 10 digital cameras in the past 10 years, not counting the SLRs.At this price, $249, I think what this camera offers is as good as you can get from a pocket camera.There are some pros and cons but the pros far outweigh the cons.I like the A2000's solid feel and weight, unlike the flimsy feel of the most other recent A series, such as my A570is.The pictures are as good as, if not better than, any pocket camera at this price.There are complaints about noise, but again find me better pictures from the same class of cameras.

The features, however, are what please me. I am not going to repeat them since it's on the product description, but the use of AA batteries and 6x zoom are must haves for me.For better pictures quality, I use my SLR, but for pocket convenience, I'll just enjoy this for the time being, until the technology catches up with our unquenchable taste.

(More customer reviews)I thought I wanted a micro-sized camera and bought 2 different brands of compact cameras just to return them because of sub-par picture quality.After that experience, I decided to give the new Powershot S3 IS a chance.Sure it might not be small enough to fit in a pocket, but what a camera!The pictures are great with sharp images from corner to corner, a 12x zoom lens, and an extremely effective Optical Image Stabilizer.The benefits of the the Optical Stabilizer cannot be understated on a camera with such a long zoom range.When you zoom into maximum telephoto every slight movement of your hands results in a huge movement at the lens.With the stabilizer though it eliminates that problem.The pictures have low noise levels from 80-400 ISO, I have not tried the ISO 800 yet, though it should be nice to have in a pinch.The tilt and swivel LCD is awesome, you'll wonder how you got along without it before.Battery life is excellent and I cannot underemphasize the benefit of the camera running on standard AA batteries.If ever you find yourself in the middle of a day of shooting and the batteries die simply pop into a local convenience store and pick up some more.I would suggest you purchase a good set of rechargeable NiMH batteries though.The movie mode is great with the ability to zoom, a dedicated record/stop button, and stereo sound!Plus, finally a Canon digital PowerShot with a live histogram!You will not be disappointed in this camera.

(More customer reviews)This camera marries some of the best features of the Canon S series like zoom and manual flash with the convenience of the A series. This camera is an upgrade of the SX100 and feels much more sleeker than the previous model.

Here is my take on the camera:

Strengths:
- 9MP CCD sensor with DigicIII processor, the CCD sensor is 1/2.3 inch which is bigger than the most SD series cameras resulting in better pictures
- Controls are intuitive and a separate replay start button on the back gives you the flexibility to switch on the camera for playback without extending the lens
- Feels good in the hands, battery compartment gives the camera a better grip, DSLR like black color
- Huge 3" LCD scratch resistant screen makes composing shots easy
- Great 10X optical zoom and 40X digital zoom
- Flash can be flipped up or down as needed, this camera also offers 3 manual flash settings which really helps with portraits
- Sharp pictures - Daylight pictures are excellent and zoom is great for capturing landscapes
- Many modes to shoot - night mode, portrait, landscape, kids and pets, indoors, special scene modes (fireworks, aquarium, foliage, snow, beach etc.) and custom colors too
- 2 extra buttons at the back for changing exposure in 1/3 stops and also adjust for face detection
- Macro mode results in stunning close-ups with outstanding level of detail
- Uses 2 AA batteries, can take 300-400 pics with one set of rechargeable NiMHs and if you run out of battery they are universally availableLimitations:
- Size and bulk makes it inconvenient to carry at all times, this will probably become your vacation/ special occasion camera.
- No optical viewfinder, has not bothered me but can become an issue for some especially in bright sunlight or if you want to conserve battery
- Noise is noticeable beginning at ISO 400, ISO 1600 mostly unuseable
- Cannot adjust focus or optical zoom while shooting in movie mode, you can only zoom in digitally which reduces movie picture quality
- Typical Canon chromatic aberration (common problem with P&S cameras)
- No RAW shooting mode

Overall, this is a great camera for the price if you want a camera with high zoom, especially for shooting outdoors in good light. It also offers some manual functions as well as flash reduction which helps you take the best picture.

Canon PowerShot SX20IS 12.1MP Digital Camera with 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch Articulating LCD Review

(More customer reviews)Let me start off by saying that I'm not a professional photographer.My decision to purchase the SX20 IS was based on a desire to get an excellent still shot camera, with high capacity zoom, that also had HD Video (720p) capabilities.So, I began my research and spent many hours scouring the web to make an informed decision.I had narrowed my choice to the Canon SX20 IS and the Panasonic DMC-FZ35.

Here are some of the key specs of each camera:

Optical Zoom (Canon: 20, Pana: 18)
Still image files (Canon: Not Raw, Pana: Raw)
Articulating LCD (Canon: Yes, Pana: No)
720p HD video per 2 GB (Canon: 10 min 33 sec, Pana: 15 min)
Video file format (Canon: .mov, Pana: AVCHD Lite)
Battery Type: (Canon: 4 AA, Pana: Li-ion rechargeable)
Stereo Audio (Both)
SD Card Storage (Both)

In the end I decided to go with Canon for a few key reasons:

#1. The articulating LCD (pull out, tilt/move) was a key factor, as I wanted to be able to shoot from many different angles.It came in handy very soon--the second time I used the camera--I was able to whip out the LCD and get some decent shots at a football game when I had to raise the camera high over my head to shoot over the folks standing in front of me.

#2. The ability to easily share video files.The .mov file format is a more widely accepted format, which can easily be shared (without processing/conversion).The files are accepted on sites such as You Tube. The files can be played with Quicktime and other media players (e.g. VLC).Although the Panasonic camera uses a format which is more compressed and allows more data to be stored on an SD card, the file format is not as wide spread and not as easy to share with others, without converting the file.

#3. Consumer Reports rankings for last year's model: Canon #1, Pana #5 (SX10 IS & Pana DMC-FZ28). I suspect the SX20 IS will follow the same trend this year when Consumer Reports releases their test results for 2009.

#4. Canon takes AA batteries.This makes the camera slightly heavier, but you'll always be able to get economical batteries in a pinch, without the need for buying a proprietary lithium ion battery.May I recommend Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable batteries. I bought some new on Amazon. They are excellent. I haven't charged them yet and I've taken 120 pictures and 40 minutes plus of 720p video. I've also played back the pictures and movies on my TV/Projector and transferred all files to my computer, using the same batteries, without charging them.And they are "..still going..."

Here are some sample pictures taken with the SX20 IS.Keep in mind that Flickr doesn't display the full, original picture which was taken in maximum resolution (in auto mode). [...].

I've taken some great up-close family shots and macro shots.They look great and are very detailed. I took some night/action pics (with the flash) and adjusted the shutter speed and ISO settings and the pictures looked great, given the conditions.

I apologize for the camera jitter in advance as I didn't have a tri-pod and I was in a tight area in the Stadium when I took the shots.

I must admit that I am thoroughly impressed with the video quality/resolution.I shot sample video from my 1 year old camcorder (Panasonic SDR-H40, a standard definition hard drive camcorder) and shot the same footage with the SX20 IS. The difference in quality was amazing.Not only was the Canon much sharper, but the richness and vibrance of the colors was so much better. I sold my SDR-H40 on Ebay within two days.I now will have only one camera to shoot stills and 720p HD video--the Canon SX20 IS. The videos from the SX20 IS looked awesome--on both my 32 inch 720p LCD and my 100+ inch screen via a 720p DLP projector. I connected the camera with an HDMI cable and bam, I was ready to watch great video and view still shots "on the big screen."See the above referenced links for video footage yourself.If I were given the opportunity to watch a football game shot in standard definition by ESPN or an HD version of the same game, shot with the SX20 IS (on a tripod, without my hand jitter), I'd pick the latter in a heart beat.

No buyer's remorse here!If you are looking for an SLR type camera, that does awesome stills and great 720p HD video (both zoomable at 20x optical), you'd be hard pressed to get more bang for your buck then the SX20 IS on Amazon.

One minor issue I've noticed is that when zooming in/out while shooting video, you can here a slight "click" when you initiate the zoom and when you stop the zoom.There is NO noise heard while the lens is zooming/telescoping in/out; the "click" is only heard when the zoom is initiated and when the zoom is stopped.The "click" is not that noticeable. I had to shoot footage in silence, after the kids had gone to bed, in order to distinguish the "click."In most shooting environments I don't expect it to be much of an issue.

Best of luck with your purchase decision.

P.S.By the way, the owner manual states that you must use the Canon software to transfer images/movies from the camera to a PC, else movies will not transfer (frames will be dropped) correctly and images shot vertically may be transferred in the horizontal orientation. So, don't just do a copy/paste of the files them self from the SD card.Keep this in mind as you view sample video on the web.

(More customer reviews)If you're trying to decide between these 3 digital elph models SD1100, SD770 and SD790 which fall in a similar price range, here's my take. I have used the SD1100 and SD790 extensively and SD770 is like an in-between hybrid.

{The SD790 is actually the 2008 upgrade of 2007s very popular model SD750. The SD1100 is an upgrade of the SD1000. Canon probably felt the need for an in-between model so the SD770 is new, with the layout and screen-size similar to SD1100 but the CCD is larger like the SD790 making it a 10MP camera.}

Common new features:
- Digic III processor = better picture taking
- Face detection - detects multiple faces in a shot and adjusts the flash, white balance so that the faces don't get bleached out and you get less red eye
- Motion detection - focuses on subject even if they're moving so your shot is not blurry.
- Shooting modes - NEW sunset mode (great results) and the usual portrait, night shot, stitch assist (panoramic), foliage, fireworks, indoor, kids and pets, underwater, aquarium, beach, snow and ALSO Color accent (keep one color and rest of pic is B/W) and Color Swap (Exchange one color with another)

Here are the pros and cons of each model:

SD1100: Canon PowerShot SD1100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver)
Pros: Small size with a nicely contoured look. Cool colors. Viewfinder with 2.5 inch screen. Lowest price.
Cons: Less MPs (8MP) and smaller CCD 1/2.5 inch.

SD770: (Priced in between SD1100 and SD790)
Pros: Smallest in size. 10 MPs. Viewfinder with 2.5 inch screen. Larger CCD at 1/2.3 inch.
Cons: Camera controls are not as intuitive and flexible as the SD790. Screen size is smaller than SD790.

SD790: Canon PowerShot SD790IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom
Pros: Small camera. 10 MPs. Mega 3 inch screen which really makes composing shots so easy. Larger CCD at 1/2.3 inch. Layout is intuitive. Flat layout on the back with extra button for replay, makes switching between modes faster.
Cons: Price is highest of the three models in consideration. No viewfinder, it hasn't been a problem for me even in bright sunlight but if you prefer to have a viewfinder it may be a deal breaker for you.

All 3 cameras come with Image stabilization and the usual Canon features and shooting modes. All three cameras are small, the SD800s and SD900s are bigger in size.

I prefer SD770 and SD790 over SD1100 due to the slightly improved picture taking.

Just for performance and features my #1 Rank goes to SD790 due to it's larger screen and intuitive controls and great pics.SD770 is a close second with a great balance between size and performance and SD1100 comes in 3rd. (Read comments section for more discussion between SD770 and SD790)

Since price of these cameras fluctuates on Amazon everyday it's hard to rank them using prices but recently I have seen the SD790 go for $189 and SD770 go for $159 and the SD1100 for $149. At just a $10 difference between the SD770 and SD1100 I will recommend the SD770.

Canon Powershot A1000IS 10MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Grey) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this camera about 15 days back. I have used it a couple of times indoors, outdoors and indoors with low-light conditions.
Used correctly, this camera does a great job of taking good quality images. I had to play with the camera for about 15-20 mins to get familiar with it so I could take the best pictures possible. My sister owned a Powershot A530 before this one and i had the same experience with that too.
This camera fits nicely in your jeans pocket and is quite light.
You will need a tripod to take good low-light shots. I have a cat and a rabbit and a 3 yr old nephew - The kids and pets setting really works well to take pictures of them. Generally the few manual settings it does have are good enough for a serious amateur photographer.
One gripe I do have is that with regular AA alkaline batteries the flash recycle time can go up to 8 seconds and the camera is blank and unusable during this time. This of course is a problem with most canon Powershots. The solution I have found is to use batteries made specifically for taking pictures (Duracell makes some) or just use rechargeable NiMH batteries. This works great. Almost down to 1 sec between shots with that.
Overall I'd definitely recommend this camera to anyone. But you have to be a little patient and get used to it first - I think this is true for any good camera out there though.

(More customer reviews)I bought this camera (Canon A460) as a second camera and was looking for a pocket-sized, compact, digital camera that had zoom and video capabilities, took AA batteries and priced reasonably cheap [...] The Canon Powershot A460 is all that.

It's small enough to fit into your palm and fits into the front pants pocket easily and is light enough that the camera is not really noticeable after a few minutes. It seems to me that Canon designed it to be carried without a camera case because there is a lens shield that pulls into place to cover the lens whenever it is powered off. (The lens retracts into the camera body when it is powered off, and the lens cover pulls into place automatically). The body is well rounded with no sharp edges anywhere that might catch parts of clothing. The LCD screen is exposed but I pasted one of those see-thru LCD screen plastic protectors (sticky on one side) on it to protect it from scratches. All the camera's openings are well protected by covers. The only cover that I thought had a little more play than it should was the battery cover.

The camera powers up extremely quickly. You can focus with either the viewfinder or the LCD screen. One thing that surprised me was that when using the viewfinder, there is no information shown on the viewfinder other than a green light to indicate that the camera is in focus or a blinking orange light to indicate it is not. The LCD mode shows a lot more info (eg, ISO speed, current resolution, etc). But, I guess it makes sense since this is a camera that is meant to be simple, and what could be simpler than knowing when something is in focus or not. That's pretty much all the info that's needed. (Switching to the viewfinder will conserve battery power).

I bought a 2GB Kingston Secure Digital card for about $13 on Amazon for this camera so there's plenty of space. The card can be removed and put into a SD card reader that comes with most modern computers and laptops. (My laptop, the Toshiba Tecra A5 has it, and it was bought about 2 years ago). The computer will recognize the SD memory card as an extra drive, and the transfer rate is extremely fast. If your computer does not have a SD card reader, then the USB connector can be used to transfer the images to your computer instead.

In video mode, the zoom works only when in the highest video resolution (640 x 480). (This was a surprise to me too. On my Canon Powershot S1, the zoom works in all video resolutions). The video is a little more choppy compared to the Canon S1.

There is no dedicated zoom lever. Two of the buttons normally used in menu navigation also serve as zoom controls.(The Canon S1 (my other camera) has a dedicated zoom lever, which is nice). I guess, one of the reasons for reusing buttons for zooming is a more compact design--no lever sticking out that might catch your clothing). Once I got used to it, I did not have any problems using the 2 buttons for zooming.

The pictures taken are the usual Canon quality. You do have to pay attention to make sure that your hands are not shaking when you press the shutter since there is no image stabilizer (I've gotten spoilt by the Canon Powershot S1 which has a image stabilizer). [...]The buttons on the camera are designed and placed so that you could operate the camera with only the right hand if so desired. The left hand is used just to stabilize and steady the camera.

This camera uses a focus beam light that helps it to focus quickly and and has the much lauded Digic II processor. Both are technological improvements over the Canon Powershot S1 which does not have an autofocus light and only has a Digic I processor.

The camera uses AA batteries (either the rechargable or the normal type will work). Easily available power was an important feature for me.

I was very pleased with the Super Macro capability of this camera, which allows for extreme close ups. To access this mode, you have to set the camera to "M" (manual mode) on the dial, and then press the Func/Set button. This will open up a menu where you can set the camera to "Super Macro".

[...] This camera (Canon A460) has a "SCN" mode in which you can choose different scenes (Portrait, Night, Kids, Pets, Indoors, Foliage, Snow, Beach). I've used the "Snow" scene setting and my pictures came out great when I'm skiing and taking pictures. (To access the Scene setting, turn the dial to "SCN" and then press the Func/Set button, which will bring up a menu that allows you to choose the settings).

I'm really enjoying the Canon A460 and it has filled its role in my camera arsenal admirably. I needed a camera that I could take with me when I'm skiing or snowboarding that was light and small and cheap. It fits into my pants pocket and is pretty light that it does not interfere with my balance, etc. (The Canon S1, though a great camera, was a little too large to fit into my pants pocket or in a fanny pack. However, it is still my preferred camera when I'm able to have a camera case or back pack with me.)

Update (4/11/2007)--I've had this camera for about 2 months now and have accidentally dropped it twice from about 2 to 3 feet onto a hard surface floor. Also, have dropped it into a foot of snow while skiing and using the video. The camera is still working flawlessly.

Just make sure you're getting at least 2300 mAH on the batteries, some cheap kits give you weaker 1100 mAH batteries.
